History

A portion of Alamo Heights, where Brackenridge Park is today, was once a Native American campground and resting point for travelers. Many explorers and troops traveling along the San Antonio River passed through the region in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Use of the river's headwaters was officially granted to missionaries and settlers in 1718.

In the next century, the Alamo Heights land was included in the survey of the city of San Antonio. The land was quickly sold, however, when the city passed an order allowing the sale of public lands to pay for city improvements. The land changed hands several times and finally, in 1890, became the property of the Alamo Heights Land and Improvement Company. This began the residential development of the city. Development continued very slowly until the 1920s, when the automobile substantially shortened the travel time between San Antonio and Alamo Heights. Terrell Heights began to experience its first growth spurt at about the same time. Initially, Terrell Heights was a municipality of San Antonio, but the larger city annexed Terrell Heights in 1945.

Community

Both communities are primarily residential suburbs today. Residents make use of nearby San Antonio for arts, entertainment, nightlife, dining and shopping. San Pedro Park in San Antonio is a popular recreational destination. In addition to its rich history, the park also offers a pool, playground, softball complex and tennis center. One of the more famous attractions in San Antonio is the Mission Antonio de Valero, more commonly known as The Alamo. Established in 1718, the Alamo was the city's first mission and the site of the infamous attacks by the Mexican Army. Visitors also enjoy San Antonio's King William Historic District, the ritziest neighborhood around in the 1800s. Of the many museums for art and history lovers to enjoy are the San Antonio Children's Museum, the San Antonio Museum of Art and the Fort Sam Houston Museum. San Antonio is home to several other museums and historic neighborhoods, as well as art galleries, theme parks and professional sports.
